The Finance Engineer Role: Job Posting Statistics
Last updated: July 2026. Corpus frozen 27 July 2026.
"Finance engineer" is roughly a year old as a job title and has no research literature behind it: no AFP or APQC benchmark, no government occupational code, no salary survey. The numbers circulating about it come almost entirely from social posts and vendor blogs that cite each other, and none of them publish a denominator.
This page reports a first-party count instead. We queried the public board APIs of 1,061 candidate employers across the US and Europe, scanned every open posting on the 421 live boards that returned, filtered on the department each employer assigns to the role itself, adjudicated the matches against written rules, and coded all 37 surviving requisitions from full posting text.
At a glance
| Candidate employer boards tested | 1,061 |
| Live boards scanned | 421 (210 Greenhouse, 211 Ashby) |
| Open postings scanned | 27,278 |
| Postings in a finance-side department | 987 |
| Qualifying finance engineering requisitions | 37, across 26 employers |
| Share of finance-department openings | 2.6%, or 1 in 38 |
| Median age of the requisitions | 36 days. One predates 2026. |
| Distinct job titles for those 37 roles | 37 as posted (36 normalized) |
| Disclosed US base ranges | 17, spanning $112,000 to $385,000 |
Method
Inclusion. A posting qualifies if, at the freeze date, it was live on an employer's own applicant tracking system and both:
- it serves the employer's own finance function, not a finance-industry vertical and not a fintech product team, and
- it explicitly requires building systems, automation, data pipelines or AI tooling, rather than merely using them.
Why we scanned departments, not titles. Employers do not agree on a title for this role: the 37 requisitions below carry 37 different titles as posted, and 16 of them contain no finance word at all. Title search cannot find this population. Instead we pulled every open posting from each board and filtered on the department the employer itself assigns in a structured field, which is what makes the reporting-line findings on this page measurable rather than inferred.
The endpoints are public and the query is reproducible:
- Greenhouse:
boards-api.greenhouse.io/v1/boards/{token}/departments, then/jobs/{id}for full content - Ashby:
api.ashbyhq.com/posting-api/job-board/{slug}?includeCompensation=true
Sampling frame. 1,061 candidate board identifiers, assembled in two passes: first US and global technology, SaaS, fintech and AI employers, then a dedicated European pass covering scaleups and fintechs across the UK, Germany, France, the Nordics, the Netherlands, Iberia, Italy, Poland, Austria and Switzerland. 421 returned a live board with at least one open posting. This is a convenience frame, not a random sample, and the Limitations section states what that costs.
Matching. Any title containing an engineering noun (engineer, engineering, architect, developer, tech lead) combined with a finance noun (finance, financial, FP&A, accounting, controller, treasury), plus any engineering-titled role placed by its employer in a Finance, Accounting, Finance Systems or Treasury department. That returned 97 raw matches.
Adjudication. The raw matches were then filtered against four written exclusion rules, applied by hand and recorded:
| Rule | Meaning | Postings removed |
|---|---|---|
| R1 | Product engineering: builds financial products for customers, not the employer's own finance function | 43 |
| R1/R2 | Mixed product and business-partner roles at one employer (Stripe) | 6 |
| R2 | Finance business partner supporting an engineering org. Matched on "engineering" but does not build systems | 4 |
| R3 | Vendor-side implementation or professional services | 1 |
| R4 | Procurement, sourcing, supply chain or generic IT infrastructure rather than finance systems | 4 |
That removed 58 of 97. The remaining 39 postings collapse to 37 distinct requisitions once roles posted across multiple locations are merged.
Coding. All 37 requisitions were retrieved in full text and coded for employer-declared department, stated reporting line, minimum years of experience, tools and platforms named, references to agents or LLMs, and disclosed pay. A field is recorded only where the posting states it. Where a posting states several experience thresholds, the lowest is recorded.
Archival. Job postings are taken down within months, so every figure on this page would otherwise become unverifiable by winter. Two layers guard against that:
- Full-text snapshots. All 37 postings were captured in full at the freeze date, each stored with its retrieval timestamp, source endpoint and a SHA-256 of the text, so any claim here can be checked against the exact wording we coded.
- Independent third-party captures. Each live URL was submitted to the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. 33 of the 37 are archived and linked in the appendix. The four exceptions are Klaviyo's three roles and Helsing's, whose careers sites and Greenhouse mirrors both refuse to serve the archiver; those are marked "local only" and rest on layer 1 alone.
Two caveats on layer 2. Several of these boards (Ashby postings, and career pages at Stripe, Coinbase and Block) are JavaScript applications, so the archived page may show a shell rather than the posting text. And where a Wayback timestamp predates our freeze date, an existing capture was reused and may differ from the version we coded. In both cases the layer 1 snapshot is the authoritative record of what was counted, which is precisely why it exists.
How new the role actually is
The widely repeated claim is that search interest in "finance engineer" grew 700%, with no query, geography or window attached. Posting dates are a harder measure and they are published in the ATS APIs, so we used those instead.
The median requisition in this corpus is 36 days old. Exactly one predates 2026. Measured on the
first_publishedfield for Greenhouse postings andpublishedAtfor Ashby, against a freeze date of 27 July 2026. The oldest posting in the corpus went live on 4 September 2025.
46% of the requisitions were first published in the previous 30 days. 76% within 90 days. 95% within 180 days. 100% within a year. This is the strongest available evidence that the role is genuinely new rather than newly named, and it does not depend on anyone's search-volume screenshot. It also carries a caveat worth stating: job boards show open roles, so any corpus of live postings skews recent by construction. What is informative here is the shape, with essentially nothing older than a year, not the raw recency.
How common the role is
2.6% of open finance-department roles are engineering roles. That is 1 in 38. Across the 421 boards scanned, 987 open postings sat in a finance-side department. 26 of them were engineering roles meeting the inclusion rule. This is the denominator that no other published figure on this role provides.
37 requisitions across 26 employers, out of 421 employers scanned. Roughly 6% of the employers in the frame had at least one such role open. The role is real and it is concentrated: OpenAI accounts for 5 of the 37, Klaviyo and Twilio 3 each.
Where in the world the role exists
The first version of this corpus scanned mostly US employers, which made any geographic claim untestable. We then ran a dedicated European pass, adding 91 live boards and roughly 3,950 postings from scaleups and fintechs across the UK, Germany, France, the Nordics, the Netherlands, Iberia, Italy, Poland, Austria and Switzerland. The comparison below is the result.
Europe does have the role, and at roughly two thirds the US rate. Of the 987 finance-department postings in the frame, 533 are US-based, 210 European, 49 Indian and 195 unspecified or elsewhere. Engineering roles as a share of those: 2.6% in the US (14 of 533), 1.9% in Europe (4 of 210). The gap is real but modest, and on four European observations it should not be over-read.
Six of the 37 requisitions are European. Helsing (Finance Data Engineer, Munich), Zilch (Senior Analytics Engineer, Finance, UK), ElevenLabs (Systems Architect, Finance team, UK), Affirm (Analytics Engineer II, Accounting, remote Poland), Celonis (Senior Finance Systems Engineer, Madrid) and Lovable (Financial Systems Engineer, Stockholm). Adding Greentube's Vienna posting, documented outside the frame, gives seven. So the answer to "does this exist in Europe" is yes, in Germany, the UK, Spain, Sweden, Poland and Austria. What Europe does not yet have is the title: not one European posting is called "finance engineer", against one in the US.
The most concentrated geography is neither. 14.3% of Indian finance-department openings in the frame are engineering roles (7 of 49), five to seven times the US and European rates. Databricks, Twilio and Stripe all place their finance systems engineering in Bengaluru while keeping the rest of their finance organizations elsewhere. On a small denominator this is partly an artefact, but the pattern is consistent across three large employers and suggests this particular function is being built offshore from the outset.
The vendor-side alternative barely exists
There are two ways a company can get this capability without a product that provides it: hire an engineer into its own finance function, or have a vendor deploy one. The second route has a name and a boom behind it, the forward deployed engineer, so we measured it on the same frame.
348 forward deployed engineer postings across 66 employers. Exactly one requisition is finance-facing. Counting titles containing "forward deployed" or "FDE": 348 open postings, collapsing to 154 requisitions across 66 employers. That is a large and well-established hiring category. The finance-facing subset is a single Databricks requisition, "Sr. Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) - Financial Services", posted across nine US cities.
Widen the definition to every deployment-shaped role and finance still accounts for 14 requisitions out of 545. Including solutions architects, solutions engineers, deployment strategists and implementation engineers gives 1,131 postings and 545 requisitions across 140 employers. Only 23 postings, 14 requisitions at 7 employers, are finance or financial-services facing, and most of those sit in field engineering or sales organizations (Databricks, GitLab, Snowflake, Temporal). They are presales and integration roles attached to a platform sale, not roles building a finance function's systems.
These roles are excluded from every other count on this page, because a forward deployed engineer is employed by a vendor and deployed into a customer. The inclusion rule here turns on serving the employer's own finance function, which is what makes the department field meaningful. The contrast is the finding: the deployment-engineer boom is real, and it is not flowing into corporate finance.
What the role is called
37 requisitions, 37 distinct titles as posted. No two employers word it the same way. Normalizing parenthetical qualifiers merges exactly one pair, Zilch's "Senior Analytics Engineer" with Whoop's "Senior Analytics Engineer (Finance)", for 36 normalized titles. Exactly one requisition is titled plainly "Finance Engineer" (VulnCheck). The others include Agentic Finance Engineer, Finance Systems Integration Engineer, Tech Lead for Finance & Supply Chain Engineering, Head of Engineering for Finance Systems, Product Leader for Finance Engineering, Financial Systems Engineer, Senior Data and AI Engineer for Finance, Finance System Architect Manager, and Order to Cash Track Lead for Finance Engineering.
16 of the 37 titles contain no finance word at all. Brex's "Data Engineer", OpenAI's "Workday Engineer" and "Enterprise Application Data Architect", Twilio's "Associate Application Engineer" and "Staff Business Intelligence Engineer", Affirm's "Analytics Engineer II", Attentive's "Anaplan Application Developer", Cloudflare's "Full Stack Engineer - Internal Audit" and ElevenLabs' "Systems Architect" all sit inside a finance or accounting department. Any count built on title matching misses them.
Where the role actually sits
26 of the 37 requisitions sit in a finance-side department. 11 do not. Inside: Finance (Anthropic, VulnCheck, Databricks, Brex, Twilio, Attentive, Mercor, OpenAI, Helsing, Zilch), Finance & Accounting (Coinbase), Accounting and Finance (Cloudflare), Accounting (Affirm, SoFi), Finance and Accounting (Relativity Space), Finance Systems (Stripe, listed internally as "7420 Finance Systems"), and Operations with a Finance team (ElevenLabs).
The claim that every posting reports into Finance does not survive a larger sample. The 11 exceptions: Klaviyo runs three "Finance Engineering" roles out of IT & Security; Block places a Senior Finance Systems Engineer in Engineering - Business Platform; CoreWeave and Epirus place theirs in Information Technology and IT and Infrastructure; Lovable in Engineering; Harvey in Product; Whoop in Business Intelligence & Analytics; Ōura in Data Engineering & Analytics; Celonis in Corporate. That is 30% of the corpus. The direction of travel is real, but roughly one role in three is still owned outside finance.
Where a reporting line is spelled out in prose, it names a finance leader. Observed lines include "VP of Financial Planning & Analysis and Chief of Staff to the CFO" (Spring Health), "VP of FP&A" (Coinbase), "Senior Manager, Finance Data and AI" (Databricks, both roles), "Head of Finance Systems" (Celonis) and "Senior Director, G&A" (Klaviyo, from inside IT & Security). Most postings state no reporting line at all, which is why the department field carries the finding.
How senior the role is
Where a minimum is stated it runs from 1 to 12 years, with a median of 5. Stated in 28 of the 37 postings. Full distribution: 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 7, 7, 7, 8, 8, 8, 8, 10, 10, 12, 12. The upper half is unmistakably senior, and the titles agree: Staff, Senior Staff, Tech Lead, Head of Engineering, Director and Architect all appear.
Two careers' worth of experience, in one posting. Spring Health requires "4+ years designing and deploying automation, AI, and/or ML systems in Finance" and "4+ years in FP&A, Strategic Finance, Accounting, or Finance Transformation." Both stated separately and additively for one Senior Finance Engineer role. It is the clearest statement in the corpus of the dual background the role assumes. (Spring Health, Senior Finance Engineer)
What tools the postings name
Frequency across the 37 coded postings:
| Tool or platform | Postings | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Python | 20 | 54% |
| SQL | 20 | 54% |
| dbt | 13 | 35% |
| Salesforce | 11 | 30% |
| NetSuite | 11 | 30% |
| Snowflake | 10 | 27% |
| Oracle | 9 | 24% |
| Zuora | 9 | 24% |
| Stripe | 9 | 24% |

| Tableau | 5 | 14% |
| Avalara | 5 | 14% |
| Claude | 4 | 11% |
| Databricks | 4 | 11% |
| Model Context Protocol (MCP) | 4 | 11% |
| Coupa | 4 | 11% |
| Pigment | 3 | 8% |
| Excel | 3 | 8% |
21 of the 37 postings (57%) reference AI agents, agentic workflows or LLMs in their requirements. Across Anthropic, Brex, Coinbase, Databricks, Harvey, Helsing, Lovable, Mercor, OpenAI, Stripe, Twilio, VulnCheck and others. Helsing's Munich posting asks the hire to "identify, prioritise, build, test, and iterate on AI agents that replace manual finance workflows, using frameworks such as LangChain, CrewAI, or AutoGen." Greentube's Vienna posting asks the hire to "explore, evaluate, and implement AI tools — including AI agents and agentic workflows" and names LangChain, AutoGen and n8n alongside Python and SQL.
Model Context Protocol appears in 4 postings across 3 employers, all on the finance side. VulnCheck's Finance Engineer asks the hire to connect GL, billing, CRM and spend management systems "via API/MCP" and to build "Claude-powered workflows that draft variance commentary, flag anomalies, and assemble reporting packages." OpenAI names MCP in both Enterprise AI Platform roles inside its Finance department. ElevenLabs names it for a Systems Architect on its Finance team. An agent interoperability protocol published in late 2024 is now a named requirement in corporate finance hiring.
The systems underneath are entirely conventional. NetSuite, Salesforce, Oracle, Zuora, Workday and Coupa dominate, with Python and SQL the most frequent languages. Worth stating plainly, because it cuts against the framing: the novelty in these postings is the agent and automation layer, not the stack. Most of the work is wiring an ERP, a billing system and a CRM together and putting an AI layer on top.
What the postings pay
17 requisitions in the frame disclose a US base range. They span $112,000 to $385,000, with a median band midpoint of $231,500. Band floors run from $112,000 (Attentive, Anaplan Application Developer, 1+ years) to $260,000 (OpenAI). Band ceilings run from $155,000 to $385,000.

The premium is inside the finance department, not against engineering
OpenAI publishes structured compensation bands on every posting and has enough open roles to support a like-for-like comparison at a single employer. Comparing band midpoints:
| Group at OpenAI | n | Median band midpoint |
|---|---|---|
| Engineering roles inside the Finance department (this corpus) | 5 | $307,500 |
| All other Finance department roles | 45 | $228,000 |
| Product and platform engineering roles | 297 | $309,000 |
At OpenAI, an engineer inside the finance department is paid 35% more than the rest of that department, and within 0.5% of a product engineer. This is the most useful compensation finding in the corpus. The premium is not paid for finance expertise, and it is not a discount for working in a cost centre. These employers are paying engineering rates for engineering work that happens to sit in finance. Single-employer result, and OpenAI is at the top of the market, so it should not be generalized without more employers publishing structured bands.
Outside the US, one posting discloses. Greentube states "The minimum gross annual salary for this position according to the applicable collective agreement is €60.000 (full-time basis, paid in 14 salaries)." An Austrian collective agreement floor, not a range, and not comparable to the US figures. (Greentube, Finance AI & Process Automation Engineer)
Limitations
- The frame is a convenience sample of venture-backed technology employers. Greenhouse and Ashby are the applicant tracking systems of venture-backed tech, so scanning them finds venture-backed tech. Banks, insurers, industrials, healthcare systems and most mid-market companies run Workday, SuccessFactors or Taleo and are absent by construction. The pay figures reflect this most severely: the median band midpoint of $231,500 is a US tech number, not a market rate.
- Geographic coverage is now two-sided but still uneven. A dedicated European pass was added, so the US-versus-Europe comparison rests on real sampling on both sides. Asia beyond Indian delivery centres, Latin America and the Middle East are not sampled, and the Indian figures come from US employers' offshore sites rather than Indian employers.
- The 2.6% share applies to this frame only. It is the share of finance-department openings at scanned employers, not an economy-wide statistic.
- Counts are a floor. 37 is what we found and verified across 421 boards, not a projection of how many exist.
- Departments are employer-declared and not standardized. "Finance Systems" at Stripe, "IT & Security" at Klaviyo and "Corporate" at Celonis may describe similar functions under different names. We report the field as stated rather than normalizing it, and readers can re-adjudicate from the appendix.
- Adjudication involves judgment. The R1 through R4 rules are written down and every exclusion count is published, but the boundary between "builds financial products" and "builds the finance function's systems" is genuinely blurry at fintechs. Airwallex, Stripe, Affirm, Lithic, Ramp, Sezzle, Toast and Fireblocks all produced matches we excluded on that basis. A reader who disagrees can add them back: it would roughly double the corpus and change its character entirely.
- Job postings expire, and fast. Nearly half this corpus was published in the previous 30 days and 95% within 180, so the population turns over almost completely twice a year. The page is refreshed quarterly against a frozen sampling frame for that reason, and the counts should be read as a snapshot of a moving population rather than a stable measure. Links in the appendix will rot within months. Full-text snapshots were taken at the freeze date and 33 of the 37 postings are independently archived, so the underlying evidence survives the links.
Figures we excluded, and why
- "Search interest up 700%." Google Trends is reproducible only against a stated query, geography and window. The circulating claim specifies none of the three. We measured recency from posting dates instead, which is published in the source systems.
- "Base salaries of $130K–$250K." No traceable source. Our 17 verified US disclosures reframe rather than confirm it: the floor is too high (Attentive discloses $112,000) and the ceiling is materially too low (five postings reach $288,000 to $385,000).
- "Hundreds of openings on LinkedIn." LinkedIn's result count expands through fuzzy title matching. Our own scan shows why that inflates: Sezzle alone posted three product engineering roles across seven countries, producing 20 near-identical listings that a title search counts as 20 openings. After collapsing multi-location duplicates and excluding product roles, the qualifying population across 421 boards is 37.
- "Figma is hiring finance engineers." Figma has open Finance roles whose scope is engineer-shaped, but at the freeze date we found no Figma role titled finance engineer and no engineering-titled role in a Figma finance department. Mercor's "Agentic Finance Engineer" does exist and is in the corpus.
- ZipRecruiter, Glassdoor, Salary.com and Levels.fyi averages. Algorithmic aggregates over inferred title matches rather than readings of posting text.
- Fintech and financial-services engineering roles, excluded under R1 though a title search returns them in bulk: Airwallex's Financial Markets and Global Treasury teams, Stripe's Treasury for Platforms, Affirm's Financial Platforms org, Lithic's treasury engineers, Ramp's accounting engineers, Sezzle, Toast, Fireblocks, Chime, and OpenAI's Applied AI "Financial Engineering" roles. These build financial products for customers. Different job.

Documented outside the frame. Two postings cited elsewhere on this page were found through web search rather than the board scan, and are excluded from every count above so the ratios stay clean: Spring Health, Senior Finance Engineer (New York, $159,100–$179,000) and Greentube, Finance AI & Process Automation Engineer (Vienna, €60,000 floor).

Changelog
- Refresh cadence set to quarterly (next run late October 2026), against a frozen 1,061-token sampling frame so that counts stay comparable run to run. Ninety days is the longest interval that still leaves meaningful overlap between consecutive corpora: 76% of the current corpus was published within that window, so at six months two consecutive runs would share almost nothing and the delta would be uninterpretable. The queries, the adjudication rules and the exclusion counts are published in the Method section above, so the run is reproducible from this page alone.
- 2026-07-27 (European pass): Added 268 European candidate boards to the frame after the corpus was challenged on geographic coverage. 91 returned live boards, adding roughly 3,950 postings and 153 finance-department postings, but only two qualifying roles: Helsing (Munich) and Zilch (UK). Corpus 35 to 37 requisitions, 24 to 26 employers. The share of finance-department openings moves from 2.9% to 2.6%. New section on geography: Europe runs at 1.9% against 2.6% in the US, and no European posting uses the title "finance engineer". Also surfaced that 14.3% of Indian finance-department openings in the frame are engineering roles, driven by Databricks, Twilio and Stripe placing this function in Bengaluru.
- 2026-07-27 (recoding pass, at publication): The European pass added two requisitions to the corpus without re-running the full-text coding, so the tool, seniority and agent-reference sections were still reported on the 35 pre-pass postings while the corpus counts said 37. Helsing and Zilch were coded from their frozen snapshots and folded in: reporting-line split 24/11 to 26/11 of 37, experience minimum stated in 28 of 37 rather than 27 of 35 (range and median unchanged at 1 to 12 and 5), agent references 20 of 35 to 21 of 37 (57% either way), and the tool table recomputed on 37 (Python and SQL 54%, dbt 35%, Airflow 14%). Recency was also restated against the actual 27 July freeze date rather than the 25 July one it had been computed on: median age 34 to 36 days, and 49/76/97/100% within 30/90/180/365 days to 46/76/95/100%. Three stale counts from the pre-pass version were corrected in the Limitations and Excluded-figures sections (2.9% to 2.6%, 35 across 330 boards to 37 across 421). No finding on the page changes direction.
- 2026-07-26 (FDE contrast): Added a measured comparison against the forward deployed engineer route, on the same 330 boards: 348 FDE postings across 66 employers, of which exactly one requisition is finance-facing. FDE roles remain excluded from every other count, since they are employed by a vendor and deployed into a customer rather than serving the employer's own finance function.
- 2026-07-25 (archival pass): All 35 postings captured in full text with retrieval timestamps and content hashes; 32 of 35 independently archived to the Wayback Machine and linked from the appendix. Klaviyo's three roles could not be archived externally (its careers site and Greenhouse mirror both refuse the archiver) and are marked accordingly.
- 2026-07-25 (second revision): Rebuilt on a sampling frame. Rather than a hand-picked employer list, we tested 793 candidate board identifiers, scanned all 23,332 open postings on the 330 live boards, and filtered on employer-declared department. This produced a denominator (834 finance-department openings, of which 2.9% are engineering roles) that the previous versions lacked, and it surfaced 12 employers the earlier passes missed entirely. Added: posting-date recency as a measured replacement for the unverifiable "700% search growth" claim; a tool frequency table across all 35 coded postings; the OpenAI three-way compensation comparison; written adjudication rules R1 to R4 with published exclusion counts; and an expanded Limitations section. Corrected the pay set after finding that a decimal-band parsing error had distorted an earlier compensation median.
- 2026-07-25 (first revision): Corpus rebuilt on employer ATS APIs rather than title search, expanding it from 12 postings to 31. This changed a headline finding: the initial version reported that every posting stating a reporting line sat in Finance, based on five readable postings. A wider scan showed a meaningful minority outside it. Disclosed pay went from 2 postings to 17.
- 2026-07-24 (initial version): First corpus. 12 postings identified, 5 coded. Six widely circulated figures excluded and documented. No salary range published: only two postings disclosed a verifiable figure. Review initially set at six months rather than the usual twelve, because a job-posting corpus decays faster than survey data. Superseded: see the 27 July entry.
